Labor and Management Cooperation at Lamson & Session's Clinton, Iowa Plant
by Jill Teubl
In 1991, WINOC assisted the Lamson & Sessions plant in Clinton, Iowa as it began its implementation of a team approach to improving operations. The team strategy enhanced the work environment in a variety of ways, including labor management cooperation. The relationship between labor and management at this facility has become exceptionally positive and productive. From developing vision statements to redesigning the breakroom; hourly associates have a voice, and that voice is heard by management.
The plantšs efforts have been recognized by the state of Iowa. The Lamson & Sessions Iowa plant was honored by the ŗState of Iowašs Economic Development 1998 Governoršs Achievement Award" as a leader in contributions to the statešs economy through innovative workforce development. The following are examples of innovative methods that are being utilized as a result of labor management cooperation at the Lamson Iowa plant:
Hands-on Learning by Management
Once a month, each person from the management team spends two hours on the shop floor actually operating the equipment. This effort helps managers better understand the issues facing the hourly associate.
Design Review Teams
These teams are comprised of labor and management representatives who work along with the equipment manufacturer to design the machinery and to ensure it operates efficiently.
Ideas in Action
Ideas are actively solicited from associates. If an associate submits an idea, it is his/her responsibility to work with members of management to implement it. If the idea is successfully implemented, the associate is rewarded. There are ways to submit ideas anonymously as well.
Recognition
Lamson holds a special award ceremony each year to honor those teams that have accomplished their goals. The associates bring their spouses to this dinner and are awarded plaques in honor of their achievements. Associates who are with Lamson for a large number of years are also recognized with service awards at this ceremony.
Continuous Education
Associates who wish to continue learning and improving skills are given an opportunity to do so via attending Community College for pre-training in math, basic electronics, or reading skills. An apprenticeship program is also available for associates. Most recently, associates from the bargaining unit assisted in the creation and presentation of internal training programs for forklift, ergonomics, and lockout/tagout.
